WHAT IS SPACE PRO?  How does it work?

We know that people are more likely to achieve their goals, if they are actively supporting others to do the same.  SPACE Pro is our premium product, which allows you to find your phone life balance with friends and family.  

For just USD$5.99 (pricing varies by country), you can invite up to four family members or friends, helping each other along the way as you share your results and goals.  Not only that, but you can share your usage results with the whole of the SPACE user base, to understand how you stack up.  

SPACE Pro is simple to use.  

STEP 1:  upgrade to pro

Visit 'Invite Friends' and follow the prompts to upgrade to Pro.


Share with us the email addresses of four other people that you would like to include in your SPACE family - this might be friends, colleagues or family members.  When you enter their email addresses, they will receive an invite.  Encourage them to download and install SPACE Pro.  

STEP 3:  track your progress

Share goals and track progress as your friends and family find their SPACE.  Keep up to date with our website, to look out for challenges to take as s group. 

You may also get invited to join other groups by other SPACE Pro members, so you'll be able to track their results too.

Constant phone use can leave us feeling distracted and disconnected. SPACE helps you find your phone life balance with a 60 day program to make you more mindful about your phone usage. We’ll show you data about how you use your phone, give you assistance with things like screen dimming, notification blockers, and session interrupts, and also give you gentle nudges throughout the day to help you find your phone life balance.

SPACE gathers anonymized information about how you use your phone, such as how many times you unlock it, how much time you spend on a session, and which apps you spend the most time in (if you’re on an Android device). We show you that aggregated data to help encourage you to modify your behaviour. SPACE can’t see what you’re doing in your apps or browsers, and it collects no information if SPACE is paused or turned off. We have partnerships with some leading universities to share anonymized data about how people use their smartphones, to help them tackle problematic phone use. We measure usage by looking at your phone’s operating systems to tell us how long it’s being used for, how often, and (on Android) which apps are being used the most. On iOS we do this by using location services. When your phone is locked, your usage is not counted. We will update your usage records on the home screen every time you unlock your phone.

SPACE is looking at your usage stats any time your phone is ‘live’. When the screen is locked, it stops recording. For example, browsing your social media will be counted, but listening to music will not be as long as the screen is locked. If your phone is locked during a phone call, this won’t count either. If you’re about to do something quite heavy on usage, like navigating a long distance, you can PAUSE SPACE so this activity doesn’t count towards your daily total.

We will award you achievements when you reach certain goals - like using your phone less than your daily target, or if you invite friends. These will appear on your home screen, and you can build a beautiful galaxy as you find your SPACE. You can find a full list of achievements to collect in the achievements tab.

We know that millions of people around the world are unhappy with their relationships with their smartphone, and are looking to find their phone / life balance. Our prototype app, Breakfree, had tens of millions of downloads, and was a top 20-rated productivity app in five countries. It’s now been redesigned with leading thinkers in the field, based on behaviour change principles … so we hope that’s a good enough reason to give it a try and take a step towards finding more space in your life.

If your friend or family has upgraded to SPACE Pro they invite you to join SPACE or if you are already using the app, they may send you an in app notification to pair with them on SPACE. If you accept this invitation you will be able to see their progress, and they can view yours. If, however, you want to be the leader of a group, and encourage the rest of your family or friends to share their results, then you can upgrade to SPACE Pro, and invite 5 other users yourself.

The basic version of SPACE will always be free, and ads free, because we believe in providing the minimum number of distractions in your life. For $8.99 USD for 3 months or $14.99 USD for 6 months, you can use SPACE PRO, which lets you invite up to 5 family members or friends to share your goals and results, helping each other along the way. We’ve designed SPACE to be a really efficient app, but it might affect your battery because SPACE runs in the background to keep track of how and when you’re using your phone. Hopefully this battery usage will be counteracted by SPACE helping you to use your phone less overall!

Not unless you choose to share it. If you want to share your usage and goals with more people, you can do so by using SPACE PRO. Even then, your usage trends only will be shared i.e. hours online, number of unlocks, and - if you’re both Android users - which apps you spend most time in. SPACE will never share actual web addresses or social media profiles that you’ve visited.


SPACE needs to keep track of the time you spend on the phone and so it runs in the background. On iOS, apps are able to run in the background only in certain conditions, and using location services is one of them.

SPACE needs to run in the background in order to track your usage accurately and help you meet your goals. If you force close the app, SPACE no longer has access to your screen time and hence will not show any usage for the period it has been off. Re-open the app from the notification “SPACE has stopped tracking your usage”, or open from the main menu.

SPACE uses your device time to calculate your screen time. If you have your device time set on auto update according to carrier, this can happen.

On iOS, location based services won’t work and therefore SPACE will stop tracking your usage stats. On Android, SPACE will continue to work.

On iOS, developers do not have access to this data, so unfortunately we can’t show it. You can, however get a good sense of how you are using your time by viewing your battery usage. Go to Settings / Battery / Battery Usage.

On iOS, location based services won’t work and therefore SPACE will stop tracking your usage stats. On Android, SPACE will continue to work.

We will update the results in progress every 4 hours from when a user first logs in. So it may be that you'll have to wait a while to see their results.
